President Koroma meets Archbishop-designate Charles

The ordination of the Archbishop-designate of the archdiocese of Freetown and Bo, Edward Tamba Charles will take place on the 14th of May 2008, at the Siaka Stevens Stadium in Freetown.  The 52-year-old was appointed on the 16th of March this year following the retirement in March 2007 of Archbishop Emeritus Joseph Ganda, who had been in post since 1980.

Any hope that African leaders would solve the political quagmire in Zimbabwe was dashed with the announcement by President, Thabo Mbeki that the country is not in crisis.  As far as dishonesty goes, it is the lowest a powerful African neighbour such as South Africa can go, which is why the people of Zimbabwe should look inwards rather than outwards for a solution to their problem.

Following the resignation in early 2007 of the Archbishop of the diocese of Freetown and Bo, Joseph Ganda the first Sierra Leonean priest, Edward Tamba Charles is now the new Archbishop designate. Fr. Charles as he is commonly known was born on the 18th of April 1956 in Kainkordu, Soa Chiefdom, Kono District.

The honeymoon is over; President Koroma must now begin to deliver on his promises is the message coming from the international community.  The New York based Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) is demanding that Koroma makes good his promise to expunge the criminal libels laws in Sierra Leone or risk reversing the democratic gains achieved during the 2007 elections.

Torture in The Gambia – AI expresses concern

Amnesty International (AI) says it is worried over the fate of a former Gambian National Intelligence Agency officer, Yahya Bajinka who has been detained in secret since 15 April 2007. AI believes he has been tortured, and is being denied medical attention in an attempt to keep his detention secret. His health has deteriorated so badly that without treatment he is likely to die.

Edmund Cowan, the 71-year-old former speaker of Sierra Leone’s largely dysfunctional parliament, during the presidency of Ahmad Tejan Kabbah, has been appointed Ombudsman by President Ernest Bai Koroma. Cowan is SLPP and a close friend of former President Kabbah.
